Technology by Hitachi Enables Storing Data on Glass Permanently
In Blog, Cognizance, ElectronicsAt Hitachi, people have developed a new technology of storing data on glass, a simple chip (or a sliver) made up of quartz glass. This chip is capable of storing the data permanently. In simple terms, the data in the form of simple binary dots is etched on to the glass by the technology developed by Hitachi. As simple as that, as long the dots stay there on the glass, the data is preserved. These microdots are easily read by any common microscope. Thus laying a basic foundation for data storage, no matter what methods are employed in the future for retrieval of this data.
In this age when we are continuously looking out for alternates to replace or improve the existing technologies, a simple technology like this promises better products in the future and more secure data storage. Moreover the quartz has excellent material properties like fire, chemical and water resistance, which will further ensure safeguarding of the stored data except in cases where the glass chip maybe physically destroyed.
This will also reduce plastic production to a great extent, if at all this technology of storing data on glass is used on a large scale, having good environmental effects. Thus we can claim this glass chip to be green or Eco-friendly. We still need to find out the process used by Hitachi to print the microdots.
